If you think Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why is too intense for your viewing, this is for you. Even if you have watched it, perhaps there’s something you may have missed and I’m hoping to bring it to your attention. I’m halfway through the series and continue to pause it to weep, so have decided to stop watching- for now at least. It addresses a lot of confronting issues- although that’s not what I want to talk about. I’m here to talk about the forgotten treasure in the show, the soundtrack.
Dylan Minnette, who plays teenager Clay Jensen in the show, picked a lot of the songs to include in the soundtrack and noted that his character’s bedroom is filled with posters of his favourite bands: Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, The Cure, The Shins.
The soundtrack is as compelling as the tragic storyline, without the visual components and dialogue from troubled teenagers to tug at your emotions.
Here are my top 13 tracks from the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack that accompanies 13 Reasons Why:
- The Night We Met – Lord Huron
- You, Me, Cellphones – Husbands
- Love Will Tear Us Apart – Joy Division
- Young & Afraid – The Moth & The Flame
- Reunion – M83
- Run Boy Run – Woodkid
- Thirteen – Elliott Smith
- Oh! Starving – Car Seat Headrest
- The Walls Came Down – The Call
- Hollow Visions – Eagulls
- The Strangers – St. Vincent
- Windows – Angel Olsen
- Rescue – Rogue Wave
