Music reporter Carlin McLellan caught up with exciting Aussie upstarts Amy Meredith this week. He talked to bass player Wade Osborn about touring, travelling and mums.

Amy Meredith, 2011
For your chance to win a CD & 2 tickets to their upcoming Newcastle show, read the full interview in Opus 1 (out in April) and answer this question:
x) What is Wade’s ultimate kebab?
Send answers to: opuscompetition@gmail.com
Winner will be drawn May 13.
In the mean time, here’s a brief excerpt for ya’ll…………….
OpusMag: Do you have a hero? Why are they your hero?
WO: My Mum is my hero because she gave birth to me and made it possible for me to grow a brain, arms and fingers so i could be in a band and do so much cool/fun stuff. Thats all you really need isn’t it. A brain, arms and fingers.
OpusMag: How do you keep from going crazy while on tour?
WO: Its hard not to go crazy on tour sometimes! When you’re on a plane/or in a van for hours on end everyone tends to go a little bit loopy. you cant really do anything to avoid this. We talk so much shit on the road, sometimes i don’t even know how it happens, it’s like you black out and suddenly then your talking about midgets pooing on each other.
Amy Meredith play at Level One in Newcastle, on May 26.

CSIRO is looking for students and staff to take part in a program called Energymark. The program is about engaging communities in an ongoing conversation about energy and climate change. The NSW Energymark program is a CSIRO initiative in partnership with the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water NSW.
Energymark works like a book club. There are eight sessions in all, and groups meet once a month, or once a fortnight, to work through the eight sessions. Typically the group will read each session before the meeting and spend the meeting discussing the content, sharing experience or talking about what’s happening in the news.
For more info check out www.energymark.com.au|

O week is well under way with NUSA, NUSA’s collectives and heaps of clubs and societies participating.
It’s big, it’s noisy and it’s lots of fun!
Swing by and gets loads of free stuff. My favourite things so far are the free calico bags I got from signing up for NUSA, being one of the first for the day to sign up for The Goonion, and the totally free one from UoN services. So useful!
I was wandering around today taking heaps of photos so here they are for you.

Get yourself a copy hot off the press at the hubs (yes, they are at city-hub too), Bar on the Hill, the NUSA O-Week stall, various other places around campus, and if all else fails drop in to the NUSA building, right next to the Hunter hub.

Last year OPUS held a competition where you could score 2 tickets to the Peats Ridge music and arts festival. The festival had a great line up including Cloud Control, Angus & Julia Stone and Newcastle’s very own The Seabellies to name but a few.
Peats Ridge was a great success, drawing a diverse and enthused crowd of revellers.

Lightspeed Champion, Peats Ridge
Keep your ear to the ground for a chance to win tickets this year.
